The Weekend Miner Mart

First Aid and Survival Gear

We will attempt to bring you information and offers on things we find educational, interesting and useful. For each product or group of products we will tell you, in a sentence or two or a short paragraph, why it is here and why we find it appropriate. We will dedicate this page to sources of first aid and survival gear, which we feel may be especially helpful.

If you have suggestions for additions to this list please feel free to let us know. If we might identify you by your web name and country, state, county and/or city in the recommendation, pleas let us know. I believe personalization always adds a nice touch. Please keep any suggestions in good taste. Remember, this is intended as a family site.

Note: The Old Miner Columns Numbers 8, 8a, and 8b have now been posted. They are the first of a series on "going into the field," and we are placing hot links in the text to take you directly to the page in a vendor's catalog where items that fit the description of what we think you should have in the field are listed for sale. The hot links below take you to the genral catalogs of the vendors if you just want to browse and make your own choices of gear.

First Aid Kits : I carry kits in my car and in my pack. The frequently come in handy and I find myself replenishing components of the kit all of the time. You can make your own, using an old tackle or toolbox and get the contents at your local drug or hospital supply store. It takes a bit of time to put one together, so if you would like to order one here are a couple of sources.

Wholesale-Direct-First-Aid.com : This company seems to have a wide variety of emergency and items available, for almost every situation. The link will take you to their home page and click on the "First Aid Kits" or the "First Aid Cabinet" picture. It will take you into the site. There are also a few First Aid Kits in the "Outdoor Supplies" area. Click on "Outdoor Supplies" and go down to "See all Outdoor First Aid Kits" for the selection.

Snake and Insect Bite Kits : The name "snakebite" says it all. If you are in the West, especially the Southwest I would recommend you, or at least someone in you group, carry one. In addition, if your medical or first aid kit does not have provisions to treat insect bites, you may want to carry a kit for these. You never know whom the neighbors or even residents of that nugget or specimen you pick up will be.

Scout Gear : While the company has a variety of camping and hiking gear and supplies they also offer a couple of different types of snake bite kits; the Coghlan's traditional type and a Sawyer Extractor Pump that claims not to require lancing. Go to the home page and enter "snake bite" in the search box (in the upper left). It should bring up both kits, along with "After Bite", which is used on insect bites and stings. Their kits have about a 10% discount if you order 12 or more; so this might be something for a club to consider.

Wholesale-Direct-First-Aid.com : This company seems to have a wide variety of emergency and items available, for almost every situation. The link will take you to their home page and click on "Outdoor Supplies" picture. That will take you to the picture titled "See All Insect Repellant and Sting Relief Products". Click on that to see what they have available.

Road Emergency Kits : I keep one on these in my truck. You may have the opportunity to meet some really nice folks in need of your help. Being prepared, as the Boy Scouts advocate, can often prove rewarding, even if it is not saving you.

Wholesale-Direct-First-Aid.com : This company seems to have a wide variety of emergency and items available, for almost every situation. The link will take you to their home page; at the bottom of it they usually have Road Emergency Kits. If not click on "Survival Kits" and there will be a selection of road survival items.

Survival Gear : I like to survive my experiences and anything that helps me attain this goal I like too. These sites have a wide array of items that may be of interest, no matter how esoteric your interests are.

Wholesale-Direct-First-Aid.com : This company seems to have a wide variety of emergency and items available, for almost every situation. The link will take you to their home page and click on the "Survival Kits" picture. It will take you to the selection available.

Go to the home page and click on the "10+ Essentials" link. The page that comes up has some interesting items, including on link called "Other Survival Gear".   Just a thought, but some of the metalized survival blankets also will work as a very large signaling mirror.
