Gold was allegedly found in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains, in Imperial County as early as 1775 but very little hard evidence has been found to support this. Without such, Imperial's claim to being the site of the first California gold strike must be relinquished to Francisco Lopez's strike on March 9, 1842. Lopez found gold in Placerita Canyon in Los Angeles County, east of Newhall. In November the first California gold sale was recorded at the Philadelphia Mint. Estimates of total gold production of Imperial County are in the range of 235,000 Troy ounces.
